A White Egret Walks the Floating Line at Ramat Gan National Park

Pale light broke across the pond at Ramat Gan National Park, leaving the water divided between brown shadow and a broad white reflection. A white egret stood on a floating log where the two tones met. At first, its stillness seemed to settle the scene. Then the wood rolled slightly under one foot, the reflection stretched, and the bird shifted its weight without moving forward. I stopped to watch because the pause was not rest. It was a calculation made on a surface that kept changing beneath it.

The first spread of wings looked like takeoff. Instead of rising, the egret stayed low and used the air to steady itself. One foot tested the wood, the other followed, and each wingbeat bought a fraction of balance before folding again. Ripples moved out from the log and broke the clear double below. I kept waiting for the decisive lift into flight, but the bird had chosen a slower route. The wings were not carrying it away. They were making walking possible. After the second opening, I stopped anticipating flight and began watching the feet. That shift changed the pace of the encounter. The large movement was in the wings, but the decision was happening below, in the toes searching for a place that would hold.

A gap between the logs turned that careful progress into a small crossing. The egret leaned forward, opened both wings, and reached one long leg toward the next piece of wood. For a moment, neither support looked secure. The old log drifted behind the planted foot, the new one dipped as the toes found it, and the bird held itself between them with its body pitched forward. Then the second foot came across. No leap, no flight, only a measured transfer from one unstable surface to another. The uncertainty lasted only seconds, but from where I stood it stretched with the broken reflection underneath.

Once both feet were on the same log, the sudden performance disappeared. The wings folded, the body lowered, and the egret continued with a steady, narrow stride. Its feet placed themselves one after the other while the wood moved almost invisibly beneath them. Nothing else demanded correction. The bird passed from dark tree reflections into open light, and the water smoothed behind it. Beneath the final steps, its reflection stretched through the pale band, then broke apart as the surface stirred again.
