Coots on calm water in Amsterdam
Amsterdam’s canals carry more than reflections and traffic, they hold daily lives for birds adapted to the city’s rhythm and noise.
On a quiet stretch, adult and juvenile Eurasian coots moved through soft, even light that flattened shadows and lifted surface texture into clean ripples.
All frames were made with a Canon EOS R5 Mark II, keeping to respectful distance while watching behavior unfold naturally.

The adult shows the classic white frontal shield cutting forward over a dark bill as it glides, the head held low and eyes fixed on a shifting pattern of ripples that open like rings behind the body.
Strong lateral lines in the water echo the long profile and keep the frame steady, so the bird’s shield and eye anchor the scene while the background stays fluid and anonymous.
I approached parallel to its path and worked slightly above eye level to emphasize shape, letting the reflections act as a simple field rather than a busy backdrop.

A juvenile faces the lens with that pale, undecided bill color and looser gray plumage which catches droplets like beads along a jacket seam.
Compared with the adult, edges are softer and the body looks shorter, so the waterline carves a gentler curve and the mood shifts from confident glide to tentative pause.
Plain words for a plain moment, the curiosity is mutual and brief, then it continues on, leaving small ripples that fold quickly into the canal surface.

Here the emphasis is texture, with side light revealing loose flank feathers and tiny beads on the back, so focus rests just forward of the eye and aperture keeps detail along the shoulder sharp while the tail and forewater cleanly blur.
Shooting from the bank, I tracked a parallel line to keep the reflection intact, avoiding low angles that would break the outline against bright streaks.
This stretch connects small residential moorings to a wider junction, and the calm allowed slow, deliberate timing without boat wake cutting through the scene.

The closing frame leans into behavior, a brief head dip toward a green reflection where canal plants tint the water, with droplets still holding on the neck and back as the bird levels out again.
